Underlayments and their impact on ventilation

If you’re looking to get your aging roof replaced, take a moment to consider your underlayments. There are 2 primary types of underlayment… felt underlayment & adhered waterproof underlayment (aka ice & water shield). On your existing roof, you likely have asphalt felt, which has a perm rating around 5-7. The new synthetic felts that are used have a perm rating below 1.

How will this impact your roof system? It results in an attic that cannot breathe as easily and won’t allow moisture vapor to escape well through the felt. Considering this, Anthem Exteriors will do a calculation of your attic ventilation and intake to ensure this excess moisture is removed through your roof vents. This may require adding more roof ventilation, changing the type of ventilation or changing the amount of intake.

Adhered underlayments can also contribute to the lower overall permeance on your roof. Adhered underlayments are now used in more areas than they were typically used in the past. Anthem Exteriors will install ice & water at a minimum of 6’ up all eaves, under valley metal, over porches, on lower slope areas and other critical flashing areas. All of this additional area will better protect your roof against ice dams and leaks, but it will demand a properly functioning ventilation system.

Contact Anthem Exteriors today if you want an inspection and assessment of your current roof and ventilation system.
